Vitamin D3
Vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol, is the natural form made in the skin as a result of sunlight. It is sequentially hydroxylated in the liver and kidneys to become its active form 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, a powerful secosteroid hormone. Vitamin D3 is best known for its role in bone metabolism and calcium homeostasis. It increases intestinal calcium and phosphorous absorption, increases kidney reabsorption of filtered calcium, promotes bone mineralization, and induces osteoclast maturation facilitating bone remodeling. Ongoing research has revealed that vitamin D is also an immunomodulator and is at the heart of the innate immune system. Vitamin D is a transcriptional activator and through a nuclear transcription factor known as the vitamin D receptor, it can activate the transcription or repression of over 900 genes and may regulate the expression of more than 27,000 genes. Vitamin D supports the normal growth and differentiation of cells and inhibits excessive or disordered cell growth. Many experts now recommend vitamin D daily intakes in the range of 2,000 to 4,000 IU.
Suggested Use: 1 capsule daily with food. Measurement of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and calcium levels is highly useful to assess the proper daily dose.
