Green Tea Extract
Green tea's beneficial effects on weight have been noted since the 1600s. Studies have shown that green tea inhibits adipocyte proliferation and differentiation and increases fat oxidation through stimulation of thermogenesis. A proposed mechanism of action suggests that EGCG, and possibly other catechins, directly inhibit the enzyme catechol-O-methyl-transferase thereby reducing norepinephrine catabolism, prolonging norepinephrine effects in synaptic clefts stimulating thermogenesis and subsequent fat oxidation. Evidence suggests EGCG may provide protection against the nonalcoholic hepatitis encountered in obese people. Studies show green tea improves glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity. Green tea is a rich source of antioxidants and epidemiologic studies reveal an inverse relationship between green tea consumption and risk of cardiovascular disease. ProThera's Green Tea Extract contains the dried extract of leaves from green tea standardized to contain at least 95% polyphenols with at least 40% epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the most active catechin (polyphenol) in green tea.
