Benfotiamine
This naturally occurring, lipid-soluble derivative of thiamine (B1) is highly bioavailable and has up to 3.6 times higher absorption than water-soluble thiamine salts. Benfotiamine is an ideal form for vitamin B1 repletion. Thiamine functions as a coenzyme in the oxidative metabolism of glucose and fatty acids and the subsequent generation of energy in the form of ATP. While deficiencies are generally not common, the elderly, heavy consumers of alcohol, and persons with impaired absorptive capacity due to disease or surgery are at significantly higher risk. Bariatric surgery patients often present with a thiamine deficiency prior to surgery, but an acute, potentially life-threatening deficiency may also develop following surgery, especially in the presence of excessive vomiting. Benfotiamine may be taken by anyone at risk for a thiamine deficiency and is especially recommended for pre- and post-bariatric surgery patients.
